Title of the Innovation: A Bi-Directional automatically opening and closing sanitation device for railway carriage toilet

Brief About Innovation

Presently in India, the excreta from the railway toilet of a passenger train is directly released on the tracks by a Hopper pipe attached to the toilet. This spoils the railway tracks and creates unhygienic conditions on the railway platform. Also, a lot of water is wasted and huge expenditure is incurred to clean the tracks.

To solve this problem, Bio toilets have been installed in many trains, but they are mostly clogged due to misuse by passengers in sleeper and general class. These clogged toilets are flushed manually by the cleaning staff on the railway tracks at stations.

These anaerobic bio toilets convert human waste into greenhouse gases - Methane (40-70%) and Carbon dioxide, thus one toilet unit generating at least 4 kg of highly explosive methane per day. ‘A Bi-Directional automatically opening and closing sanitation device for railway carriage toilet’ is a simple and cost-effective solution that works on the principle of wind speed. The device is useful till the bio toilet are working successful and for those carriage where bio toilet are not suitable.
