Area of Technology:Glass & Ceramics
Title of the Innovation: Ceramic Biomedical Implants
Brief About Innovation
Technology Profile
An improved hip joint prosthesis has ben developed for Total hip replacement (THR) based on ceramic head and polymer acetabular cup. Some of the major raw materials Utilized in the process are Alumina, ultra-high molecular weight polythene, SS316L stem, bone cement etc..
The use of bioceramics has mainly concentrated on orthopedics and dentistry. Bioceramics in orthopedic applications provide the advantage of chemical similarity to natural skeletal materials. Ceramic implants have some inherent advantages such as inertness in a biological environment and biocompatibility; they produce nearly no wear debris and can be designed to match the material properties of natural bone. All these result in a much longer life of the prosthesis.
Techno-Economics
• These items are being available with 2.5 times cheaper prices than their counterparts
• 1 lakh patients every year would be directly benefited
• Unit price of imported ceramic implants: Rs 1 lakh, cost of production items: Rs 25,000 max.
