Title of the Innovation: Indian Tsunami Buoy System-I

Brief About Innovation

Introduction:

India, with a long coast line of more than 7500 km, remains vulnerable to natural disasters such as tsunami’s and cyclones. Indian Tsunami Buoy System (ITBS), developed is used for monitoring the water level changes in deep oceans to identify the propagation of a tsunami wave. The Indian Tsunami buoy systems type -1 consist of two units, a surface buoy and the Bottom Pressure Recorder (BPR). Communication between BPR and the surface buoy is established through acoustic modems and surface buoys uses satellite (IMARSAT, INSAT and Iridium modems) to communicate the recorded values to shore station.

Salient features of the technology and advantages:

  • The shape of the surface buoy is cylindrical and consists of a low power Data acquisition system (CPU), central cylinder to hold electronics and battery packs, Acoustic modem, Satellite modem (INMARSAT, INSAT), Interconnection cables to connect the CPU to Satellite and acoustic modem, Acoustic modem-armor cable and RS232 buoy CPU to PC/ Laptop communication cable.
  • The Bottom Pressure Recorder unit consists of a low power Data acquisition system (CPU), battery packs, highly accurate pressure sensor, acoustic modem, independent acoustic release, retrieval floatation system, temperature and tilt sensor, enclosures to hold the electronics, pressure sensor, battery packs and acoustic release.
  • Communication between BPR and the surface buoy is established through acoustic modems and surface buoys uses satellite (IMARSAT, INSAT and Iridium modems) to communicate the recorded values to shore station.
