Brief About Innovation

Introduction:

Data Buoys are moored offshore platforms, fitted with meteorological and oceanographic sensors, deployed at specific locations to observe in-situ Met-Ocean data and subsea parameters at regular intervals. Natural disasters such as storms, cyclones and hurricanes necessitated the scientific community, weather forecasting organizations, disaster warning agencies, and governments to work towards real time availability of critical marine data. Real-time data from these platforms are used for scientific research, as well as in support of weather and marine forecasts and as an aid to climate modelling and prediction. The technology provides a indigenously developed a low power, moored, data buoy system. This Buoy consists of Central Processing Unit, which is a micro controller based Embedded Unit. Met Ocean Buoy System Type – 2 is floating platform with two different shape of the hulls.

Salient features of the technology and applications:

  • Met Ocean Buoy System Type – 2 is floating platform with two different shape of the hulls (Cylindrical 2.4 m diameter & Discuss 2.2 m diameter) made of FRP materials.
  • It is capable of measuring the sea surface waves and currents and also can measure subsurface Current, Conductivity and Temperature up to 500m water depth.
  • The buoy system has facility to transmit data using IMARSAT, INSAT and Iridium communication. Based on the user requirements, the data acquisition interval, data transmission interval and sampling frequencies can be configured in the CPU. Iridium telemetry implementation subjected to approval from department of telecommunication.
  • The Solar Panel provide the necessary power source apart from the battery as well as takes care of overcharging the battery and deep discharging.
  • The CPU of MOBS-2 processes the meteorological and Oceanographic parameters received from various sensors and then send the processed data to base station using satellite transmitter. It also controls the power to the sensors, stores the raw sensor data in and stores the processed data inside internal memory.
