THERMOSYPHON FOR POWER TRANSFORMER

Thermosyphon is an on line transformer oil filtration system having some absorbents and mounted in the flow line of transformer oil out side the main tank of transformer. In many industrially advanced countries this system is frequently used for bigger transformer of ONAN (Oil Natural Air Natural) or ONAF (Oil Natural Air Forced) cooled. Although some Indian transformer manufacturers are aware about it however there are some grey areas like type and quantity of absorbent, design of thermosyphon fixture, maintenance schedule and doubt about dissolution of absorbent with oil, etc.

DEMAND

Transformer manufacturers should incorporate this device in the present transformer to increase the life of the transformer oil before supplying the same to Electricity Board, Railways, NTPC, etc.

PRESENT STATUS OF THE TECHNOLOGY IN THE COUNTRY

Only few major transformer manufacturers are aware about the thermosyphon system. However due to lack of feed back from users, performance of existing system is not known. Manufacturers have desired that data pertaining to :

Usefulness of thermosyphon,

specification and quantity of absorbent,

maintenance schedule,

selection of suitable design and clarifications about dissolution of absorbent should be made available to them.

WORK DONE AT THE RESEARCH INSTITUTE

The Research Institute has identified suitable absorbents, their specification, quantity, maintenance schedules and optimised an appropriate design of fixture. Institute has also studied various parameters which can affect performance of thermosyphon..

Study was carried out on an actual transformer with indigenous materials. Results indicates that acidity of oil and moisture content has reduced in comparison to transformer without thermosyphon. Transformer oil has been tested as per IS: 1866-1983 for comparison purpose.

EQUIPMENTS REQUIRED TO FABRICATE THE DEVICE

No special equipment is required for fabrication of this device. Any transformer manufacturer having basic fabricating facilities can manufacture the same without any additional investment.

RAW MATERIALS REQUIRED

All the raw-materials required for fabrication of the device and consumables are available indigenously.

COST OF CONSUMABLE

Not significant in comparison to gain achieved.

TECHNO ECONOMICS OF THE DEVICE

·         It does not require shutdown of the transformer for routine maintenance.

·         Life of transformer oil including insulation of the windings increases.

·         Reduces cost incurred on frequent filtration of transformer oil. For example a power transformer having 20 K litre transformer oil (1MVA rating) the life of the transformer oil is 25 years; by mounting thermosyphon life increases by 5 more years without any significant additional cost. Total saving could be around Rs.1.5 lakhs against cost of thermosyphon Rs.10,000/- to Rs.50,000/- apart from saving from shut down, filtration etc.

NOTE:

For incorporating thermosyphon in the transformer no special changes are required in the existing design. The cost of thermosyphon unit for 100 KV transformer is about Rs.1000-1500/-.
