PREPARATION OF OXYGEN SCAVENGERS
|
The removal of dissolved
oxygen from water during its treatment is an utmost step particularly for steam
generating system, as the dissolved oxygen aggregate the corrosion of the
metals. Although, there are several methods available for removal of such
oxygen, all of them are not effective and require prolonged treatment time.
The use of scavengers for removal of oxygen is found to be an effective and
less time consuming way. The National Metallurgical Laboratory, Jamshedpur,
India has developed a "Catalytic Oxygen Scavengers" which is found
to be capable of removing oxygen from water to the extent of 96%. This
catalytic scavenger would be very useful in the prevention of corrosion of
metal equipments in steam generating system, water circulating system,
automobile radiators, boiler water, drilling fluid used in drilling oil and
gas wells etc.It can be used in any type of steam or hot water boiler system.
In India there are many
power plants coming up in the neer future, some of them are under
implementation stage and others are in the pipeline. The demand for boiler
water treatment chemicals are going to be increased tremendously. The
Catalytic Oxygen Scavengers will therfore poses a very good potential. The
present demand is in the range of approximately 1000-tonnes annually which is
expected to increase further with the growth of industries. PROCESS The process for
preparation of oxygen scavenger involves chemical reactions of the
ingredients in stages under controlled conditions. Property-wise the oxygen
scavenger developed at National Metallurgical Laboratory, Jamsh-edpur,
removes 96% of dissolved oxygen. Normal pollution control precaution are to
be adopted. ADVANTAGES It is efficient in the
removal of dissolved oxygen from Industrial boilers, process water steam
generating system upto high pressures. It removes 2.8 ppm of oxygen per
minute at 40 ppm, whereas the conventional one removes 0.3 ppm of Oxygen per
minute. The product provides a supplemental control for dissolved oxygen by
reducing oxygen entrained in the water system. Reduction of the entrained
oxygen eliminates oxidation corrosion of the piping and boiler water surfaces
which would occur without proper control. SCALE OF DEVELOPMENT The laboratory has
carried out work on 5 litre batch scale. SAFETY CONSIDERATION Avoid contact with skin
or eyes. Wear safety goggles & gloves. Wash the contacted area with
water. |
