MANUFACTURE OF MATT GLAZED
CERAMIC TILES FOR FLOORING & WALL FACING
|
The process for manufacture of Matt glazed ceramic tiles for flooring and wall facing, as practiced by the established companies utilises two stage firing that consumes not only high energy but also longer time. Central Glass & Ceramic Research Institute, Khurja, Calcutta, India has developed a technology for the manufacture of Matt glazed ceramic tiles for flooring and facing. The process can be easily adopted by small scale sector with limited resources. The technology is highly cost effective as it utilizes locally available machinery and low grade cheaper raw materials. The product developed by this process can also be used for interior and exterior decoration of buildings and various other purposes. These tiles can also find vast market in low cost housing for rural population. PROCESS The process is quite
cheaper than that uses modern spray drying techniques and ensure saving of
energy at different stages. The process consists of primary crushing of raw
materials by jaw crusher, dry/wet grinding in ball mills, mixing of water and
binder in U-mixer, granulation, pressing, glazing by spraying and then firing DEMAND POTENTIAL Rapid urbanisation and
industralisation particularly in the developing nations have made a
significant impact on the standard of living of common people. The resultant
continuous rise in the standard of living demands for low cost building
material since the limited resources still remains the main constraint for
the people from middle class of the society as well as rural people from
using highly sophisticated and high cost building material. The matt glazed
Ceramic Tiles produced by the present process offers an excellent solution,
since the product with low cost of production compare well with the
properties that are offered by other processes. On the other hand, the
process can easily be adopted by small scale manufacturers with limited
resources. The process therefore, offers an excellent solution to the
developing countries to produce the product at lower cost by small scale
manufacturers. SPECIFICATION OF THE
PRODUCT The product obtained by
this process has fired strength of around 40 N/mm2, water absorption at
1150-1180°C is 0.5% to 1% and impact strength 0.02-0.04 kgfm/cm. The crazing
resistance conforms to IS: 2838-1964. The process has been developed on a
semi commercial scale. Advantages :
