FREE FLOWING IODISED SALT
|
Certain
elements like sodium, chlorine, calcium, magnesium,
phosphorous, iron, zinc, copper manganese and iodine are
required for maintaining metabolic and physiological
activities of human body. Iodine plays an important role
in emulating proper physical and mental growth of human
being. The daily requirement of iodine is 40 micrograms
for children upto six months of age and 150 micrograms
for a grown up adult. For pregnant and lactating mothers
the daily requirement goes upto 175 t0 200 micrograms.
Insufficient intake of iodine generally results in Goiter
retarded mental and physical growth, deaf mutism
cretaniom, increase in still births and infant mortality.
Iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) can be prevented by
addition of iodine to common salts. Salt has been
considered the most effective, economical and self
controlling carrier for iodine. The Govt. Of India has
taken a policy decision to iodise the total edible salt.
Common salt is always associated with many impurities and
some of them are hygroscopic in nature and therefore when
powdered to the requisite grain size it may not be free
flowing which is a much required property. In humid
conditions, the common salt, even free from hygroscopic
impurities, absorb moisture and forms lumps or cakes. The
Impurities in the salt affect the shelf life of iodine.
The non-uniform salt crystals may also result in
non-uniform distribution of iodine. Therefore it is
necessary to incorporate small quantity of chemicals
viz., anticaking agents alongwith iodating chemicals to
the common salt after purifying in order to get a free
flowing iodised salt. The process being offered produces
a purer salt with less soluble as well as insoluble
impurities, having uniformly sized salt crystals which
are coated with iodating and anticaking agents. Quality : The salt obtained by this process is a free flow iodised salt which is almost similar to physical as well as chemical properties to salt obtained by forced evaporation techniques. It has 98.2 - 99.2 % purity, 32 ppm iodine and 200 - 500 micron particle size. PROCESS The process involves loading of the raw salt to grinders, washing in a wash column, draining of wash liquor, submerging washed salt crystals in solution containing iodating and anticaking chemicals, loading of wet washed salt to mechanical devices, removal of solution from salt in mechanical devices, drying, sieving and packing. |
