Development in sensor technology are taking place at an unprecedented rate. This is mainly due to emergence of new type of materials and new class of biosensors. National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi have designed and developed knowhow on Glucose Biosensor in collaboration with Centre for Biochemical Technology, Delhi. The glucose biosensor can sense glucose concentration in blood from 40 mg/dL to 600 mg/dL of blood glucose. The device is compact and user friendly and it can be effectively utilized in diabetes monitoring, bed side diagnosis, pre and post prandial glucose levels and diabetic counseling etc.

    Description

The device essentially consists of an enzyme (glucose oxidase) immobilised at a suitable electrode that is coupled to an electronic circuit. Amperometric method of detection has been employed. The various steps involved in the design and development of glucose biosensor are:

    i) Preparation of strip type Electrodes: The strip is made of flexible plastic (PVC) having standard dimension. The graphite tracks are printed by the screen printing technique.

ii) Assemblies of Electronic circuitry: The strip are inserted into the port provided on the device and a drop of blood is added to the surface of the working electrode covering the reference electrode also. Switch is pressed to activate the process to monitor glucose concentration in the blood. Glucose concentration in mg/dL is displayed.
