CHLORINE LIQUID
|
Drinking water if not
treated properly has been found to be the major source of diseases like
Cholera, ameobiosis, gastro-enteritis, hepatitis etc. There are a large
number of people who drink water of doubtful quality since it is often
contaminated with effluents. Poor sanitation and sewage disposal in many
places also cause public health hazards. Effective utilisation of water
treatment practices to remove the pathogenic bacteria have contributed to a
significant reduction of these diseases and therefore providing safety
drinking water is the basic criteria for healthy living conditions. While sterilisation is
the complete destruction of all the life in water, disinfection is the
complete destruction of all pathogenic organisms which is actually required
for drinking water. Disinfection is usually brought about by chemical agent,
such as chlorine, bromine, fluorine, iodine, ozone etc. Out of these,
chlorine and its compounds are found to be most suitable and effective for
common household purposes for purifying drinking water. The hypochlorite
solutions are in use either as sodium hypochlorite or calcium hypochlorite
for addition of chlorine in water. For household disinfaction, lower
concentration of hypochlorites are used. The most convenient way for addition
of chlorine in water for disinfection of water is chlorine liquid and
chlorine tablets, which when added to the water, liberates chlorine. Chlorine
liquid is a stable hypochlorite solution, named as ‘chlorine liquid’ with an
anticipation that it would be most convenient and popular to common people.
It can be used in hospitals, dispensaries, hotels, railways for providing
safe drinking water. It is also convenient for carrying while on tour or for
outing. Product Properties and
Specifications Chlorine liquid should
contain 5.0 +- 0.25 mg. chlorine per ml of solution. To compensate losses
during storage, 60% of excess chlorine can be maintained so that chlorine
content at the end of two years of shelf life will be above the prescribed
limit of 5.0+- 0.25 mg per ml. PROCESS The powdered raw-materials
are dissolved in demineralised water and kept seperately . The different
solutions are added to the mixing tank in desired proportion and stirred
properly . Precaution should be taken to see that there is no lump formation
in the solution. The mixture was allowed to settle for about 12 to 14 hrs.
The samples of clear solution are taken and tested for available chlorine
content. The clear solution is decanted and kept in a storage tank. The
solution from the storage tank is filled up in desired packings and sealed
properly. |
