Cement Paints is a material consisting of port land cement and other ingredients like lime, pigments, hydroscopic salts, water repellents and fungicides. The material readily mixes with water and is used on porous surfaces like masonry concrete, rough plaster except gypsum plaster. These paints have a better performance than distemper paints for outdoor protection and decoration of buildings. In view of the growing demand for this material, it was considered necessary to format the standard covering the minimum quality requirements of this material. The need to ensure the absence of organic binding materials and the fungicide action of cement paint were considered important.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Cement paints is the term applied to dry powders made from Portland cement by the addition of pigments, fillers, accelerator (Calcium chloride) and water repellents (e.g. calcium stearate). The powder is merely stirred with water before being applied. For white effect titanium dioxide is used. Any other pigments should be alkaline resistance.
The main raw material used in the manufacture of cement paint are given as under :

  • Portland Cement
  • Lime
  • Pigments.

Cement paints are used for exterior surfaces of the Building and also impart properties of water repellent to exterior surfaces.
The general application of cement paints specially in building works, has increased tremendously due to increased construction activity. The rapid urbanisation process, Government sponsored housing projects and general sophistication in taste have all added to increasing use of cement paints.

PROCESS DESCRIPTION

Cement paints manufacture consists of thorough mixing of dry components of the formulation after it should be very finely ground. The paint manufacturer usually grinds and regrinds the lots and sifts it, returning the tails in the pulveriser. The reagents, pigments, plasticizing materials and preservatives are then added in a correct proportions and incorporated thoroughly in a dry mixer. The mixer has a set of revolving curved blades and is similar in construction to the dry mixer sometime used for blending pigments in the manufacture of paint. After mixing, the batch is passed through a stone mill or high speed pulveriser. It is sifted again and sent back to the pulveriser until the whole batch has been reduced to a satisfactory degree of fineness. After this it is again mixed and packaged.
