During
the rearing of silkworms there is a need to take prophylactic
measures to prevent diseases. One such measure is to use chemical
disinfectants (bed disinfectants), which are in the powder form. The
general practice is to put the disinfectant powder in a muslin cloth
along with a few pebbles and then shake it over the silkworms. This
process does not evenly spread the disinfectant as well as the
disinfectant affects the person who does this operation. To
overcome the above problems, the Central Sericultural Research and
Training Institute, Mysore has designed and developed a powder
duster, which can be operated on electric power (battery or AC
power). The powder duster has a hopper in which the powder is
filled. After switching-on this device, it is moved over the
silkworms. The powder is uniformly spread on the surface of
silkworms without raising-up and hence does not cause any harm to
the person. The device is very safe and can be used by all the
rearers. The
machine is simple in construction and can be fabricated/manufactured
using locally available material like plastic plates, steel rods,
